Single Event Learning
The dog judges every event that occurs in her life as either relevant or irrelevant.
Here’s one example: A skateboard rolling down the sidewalk star¬tles your dog and she yelps. You scream, run over to the dog and pick her up. You then carry her into the house and spend the rest of the after¬noon soothing and caressing her on the sofa. The dog judges this event as relevant.
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE CORRECTION
The word correction is used throughout this text. My use of the word refers to both positive punishment (adding something unpleasant) and negative punishment (taking away something pleasant). When choosing the type of correction to use, you should take into consideration the difficulty of the exercise and the temperament, drives and sensitivities of the dog. No single correction is right for every dog, and not all corrections involve physical force (that is, positive punishment).
Here is a partial list of positive punishers and negative punishers that are used in this book.
◆ Ignoring the dog
◆ Leash and collar correction
◆ Removing a treat or toy
◆ Sound correction or Scat Mat electric shock
Another example: You drop a glass in the kitchen sink and cut yourself. Your dog is startled by the noise, but since you are unaware that your dog is in the kitchen behind you and you are busy tending to your own cut finger, you don’t rush to console the dog. Later you inter¬act with the dog as though nothing happened, because you didn’t see her being startled. The dog judges this event as irrelevant.
Taken together, skateboards are now extremely relevant to the dog and she is terrified of them, but the sound of breaking glass is irrelevant.
